ABOUT ME

Dr. Alexandra Koumpi, MD

Thank you for visiting my website. To provide you with some insight of my qualifications and medical background I have detailed the relevant information in the following.

I was born in Piraeus, Greece where I attended grammar and high school. Later, following successful national exams I studied Medicine in the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece) for six years achieving the MD degree. I then moved to the USA and undertook a Research Fellowship in Microbiology/Immunology in the University of Indiana (USA), and The Eye & Ear Infirmary of the University of Illinois (USA).

Returning to Greece, I was trained in Ophthalmology, at the General Hospital of Athens, where after successfully passing specialty exams I became a qualified Consultant Ophthalmologist.

My passion to expand my clinical & surgical knowledge and skills in Ophthalmology and particularly in Cataract and Glaucoma led me to leave Greece and take up an appointment in the UK’s National Health Service. I acquired a huge amount of experience in all aspects of Ophthalmology from my initial post in the Royal Victoria Infirmary (Newcastle), followed by an advanced training (Fellowship) in the latest clinical & surgical care of Glaucoma under Moorfield’s Prof. Rupert Bourne in Hinchingbrooke Hospital (Cambridge).

That was followed by a leading role in the NHS as Substantive Consultant of Cataract & Glaucoma at Hywel Dda University Health Board (Aberystwyth, Wales), Cumberland Infirmary (Carlisle, Cumbria) and The Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow, Essex).

As a Lead Consultant, I successfully managed patients with a wide variety of eye problems, and complex surgical cases in both Cataract and Glaucoma.

The broad experience in all aspects of Ophthalmology I gained in these years working in the NHS, enables me to provide the best possible care to my patients in my practice in Polis Chrysochous, Paphos Cyprus.

I am very happy, not to say proud, of the fact that the vast majority of my patients visit my practice as a result of “word of mouth” recommendations from patients who are very happy with the treatment and care I provide.
